From shopping giants like Myntra and Amazon, to medical firms like Discovery AI and Nirmai, AI has knocked down all the doors of development and customer satisfaction.

The brief

The term Artificial Intelligence was coined back in 1956! But we have yet not seen its full potential yet. To take a leap in the direction of development, Ads N Url was trying to do something we have only seen in movies. To make AI more useful for offices and workspaces, we were required to develop a humanoid robot! That’s right, a robot that can act as your personal assistant, work the machines, attend the front desk, and help with the traditional sales system.

Breaking the typical routine, we were out there to do something uncommon. The chances of failure outweighed the chances of success since all we really knew about AI till now was - checking for places with Google assistant, asking Siri the weather, and getting updates about weather and stocks. But where’s the fun of innovation without a good percentage of risk?

How about controlling robots using it?

The goal is to develop a portable or multi-screen experience system or application for managing humanoids. Managers and staff will use the request to set up and handle the robots, as well as obtain prompts from the robots for certain activities. Using it should be highly easy and intuitive as it is mostly run by low-skilled staff.

The scope

What?

An application to control Humanoids. Managers, Staffs can handle humanoids and make them do certain tasks. The app will focus on the user’s experience while interacting with the humanoids.

Where?

Mainly for office spaces, educational institutions where there are tasks which can be done by a humanoid.

When?

Right now. Already people are slowly adapting to use humanoids to perform tasks which are happening repeatedly so a system using which a human can interact with a humanoid is necessary considering this.

Why?

Masterminds like Stephan Hawking, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates working in adapting artificial intelligence to humanity in the near future. Although this science has not developed too much now, automatically programmed computers and robots can help a system to run in an error freeway. Already people are slowly adapting to use humanoids to perform tasks which are happening repeatedly so a system using which a human can interact with a humanoid is necessary considering this.

How?

By making it as easy as interacting with an AI bot or driving a self-driving car. People are ready to adopt an efficient lifestyle if it means they aren’t giving up anything — like precious time or peace of mind.

Who?

The urban people mainly — they are the ones who are early birds in trying out things and taking it forward. After some time, others follow. — they are the ones who are early birds in trying out things and taking it forward. After some time, others follow.

Assumptions

Human interaction

The robot should be able to understand language that a human speaks and the gestures that he/she conveys.

Connect to the server

The robot should be able to convey necessary information from the domain server to the people who are interacting with it.

Technologically

The robot should include features like retina scanner, fingerprint scanner, etc where it's the prospects.

Mechanics

The robot should be mechanically advanced and should have balancing and movement.

Use Cases

Based on research on Grey areas and possible gaps, I converted them to possible Use Cases.

In an airport helping security scan, providing instructions to the travelers about the gates, boarding, etc.

Working in a corporate company team, recording meetings, converting notes to digital versions and helping people to do their daily tasks.

Robot working in a smart home, helping people and controlling smart devices (eg. Jarvis from the Iron man movie).

Quick user research gave the realization that if the dashboard is kept as the main feature around which every feature is organized.

User Journey Map

John is an HR working in a corporate company. He usually conducts interviews for various candidates. Although he has a team, handling all the candidates, greeting them, giving them snacks, etc. is kind of a tough job. Considering this, the company purchased a robot, ROBI. ROBI means ‘Simulated Intelligent Artificial Humanoid. ROBI is programmed with certain defined tasks. John can use ROBI to do certain tasks which are already defined in ROBI, and also combine a few tasks and create another task. ROBI can be connected to the company server, where it will get all the details of the candidates coming for the interview and also ROBI can record each and every movement and conversation of candidates.

Wireframing

Quick paper wireframes were made following the Information architecture to test with the user. These were made in tandem with digital screens to give the user an idea of how data is structured and how it looks and feels.

Testing the idea

The Digital prototypes were tested with a few users. They were asked to do tasks and describe their thoughts along the process. Other times A/B testing was done for some screens, although the research was very rapid, unstructured and organic.

I wanted the app to be as clutter-free as possible. This helps focus on the main features of the application.

Continuing with the UI, Kept the category page pretty similar to standard eCommerce layout as not to confuse the user. Keeping a filter for Home try on if the user is focussed is pretty sure to try before buy whatever the item is.

A solution to keep both — the normal and Test fit products in a single card as discussed in the pain points, hence the toggle button will help me identify the product and its further lifecycle.

In case there is no product for a test fit, the user will simply proceed with the regular checkout

Selecting the timing is very critical since the task mentioned me the delivery to be in hours — I am not using the date selection here, assuming it is for the same day.

Backend

Ads & Url’s application development team in collaboration with the client’s BDM experts.

To build and provide a robust backend, we chose Node.js for this mobile application that would manage and cater the needs of the application.

Apart from the basic advantages of Node.js, here’s why we deemed it perfect for this project:

  • Asynchronous - All APIs of Node.js library are asynchronous. Which means no blockages at all. This in turn helps in making the app work faster and we surely don’t want our robot to lag, do we?
  • Fast as Flash - Since it's built on Google Chrome's V8 JavaScript Engine, Node.js library has a very fast code execution.
  • Highly Scalable - Node.js uses event looping with a single threaded model. With the event mechanism that works in an asynchronous way, the server becomes more scalable.
  • No Buffering - No one wants their personal assistant to buffer once they have given them an order. To avoid the same we integrated our robot with Node.js that can output the data in chunks.

To top it off, we added:

  • Integration of API with the mobile application.
  • Integration of payment gateways for all the transactions on the platform Amin panel for the client to view and manage all the activities on the platform, along with queries of customers if any.
